Seven years ago the large family made there way to the outskirts of Tijuana looking for work.Mom and Dad both found work in the factories, Dad working at night and Mom during the day. They settled with their ten children near the top of a mountain in the section of Tijuana called El Florido. They would build their
house little by little.
Almost immediately they found a church they could call their own.Named Monte Horeb Baptist Church, it was located about a mile down the mountain.
When the youngest of the ten children, Diana, turned 6, she started her schooling in a public school, as did her brothers and sisters before her.Her story, though, differed from that of her siblings. She simply did not understand what the teacher was instructing and could not complete any work. She spent two years in first grade and another two years in second. Each class was large and her teachers simply passed her by, assuming that she was not capable. After four years she still could not read a word.
Frustrated and not knowing where to turn, Diana's mother expressed her concerns at church one day with the director of the grade school run by the church itself. The school gave a discount to church members, but still the family could not afford to send Diana to the Baptist Grade School. The director further explained that there were some scholarships available and that one would be reserved for Diana.
So, in March of 2006 Diana enrolled
in the Monte Horeb School, her tuition taken care of through a STEP (Student Tuition Expense Program) scholarship sponsored by International Ministries. She was immediately placed in one of Patti's classes for children with special needs. In a few short months, by December of 2006, she was not only reading but close to reading at grade level.
For Diana, the Monte Horeb church and school, together with a token of love in the form of a STEP scholarship, have meant all the difference in the world. To God be the glory.
